The Illuminated Mummy

“Thanks to Belfast-based photographer Michael Taylor, a new species of mummy has emerged. A current passes through copper electroluminescent (EL) wire, causing the surrounding phosphor coating to emit light. The wire is wrapped around the custom-made costumes worn by models or mannequins, and the movements are then recorded, capturing the kinetic energy.

‘In the Lumen series, the topic of investigation is light itself,’ says Taylor. ‘It is a lifetime project in which various aspects of light are explored in separate bodies of work.’”

Light Painting by Andy Hemingway

“Ribbons of light flutter through empty, open spaces, weaving luminescent floating images that stand out against the stark, cold appearance of the abandoned garage. With a flashlight and some special tools, Hemingway can frame his shot on a tripod, set a long exposure and dance through the shot with his lights in hand.”

Nowhere Near Here

If life is a catwalk, run like a dog.

‘Nowhere Near Here’ is a stop motion animation that uses a combination of light with stencils and long exposure photography to tell the story of a dog running around the city at night, doing whatever a dog does. The animation was first exhibited at the The Herbert, in Coventry, on the 7th October 2010.
